Breed characteristics
Within the same genetic pool of Russell Terriers we find two main breeds that are very similar to each other, however it is relevant to point their particular characteristics. Whether you want a companion, show or working dog, here is a list of differences that you should have in mind.
Jack Russell Terrier
Officially listed as "Russell Terrier". Its coat may be smooth, broken or rough, predominantly white with black and/or tan markings, it . According to the American Kennel Club, he Russell Terrier should preferably feature a "sturdily built yet balanced body with smooth muscle transitions, able to traverse narrow tunnels".
In size, the Russell Terrier measures from 10"-12" (25.4 cm to 30.48 cm). The overall presentation is a compact, harmonious rectangular silhouette, in sound athletic condition. The skull is flat and of moderate width which gradually decreases to the eyes and then tapering to a wide muzzle, that slightly narrows to the end maintaining very strong jaws. Its dropped ears are small "V" shaped, nose must be black fully pigmented, and eyes are dark-colored, not protruding. Parson Russell Terrier
The Parson Russell Terrier features harsh coat that may be broken or smooth. Its chest is small, this allows him to chase his quarry underground, and its legs are longer compared to the Jack Russell. The tail is docked so its length is approximately at the same level than the skull. The ideal height of a mature dog is 14" (35.56 cm) at the highest point of the shoulder blade, and bitches 13" (33.02 cm).
In overall length to height proportion, the Parson Russell appears square and balanced. The skull is flat, fairly broad between the ears, and narrows slightly to the eyes and the stop is well defined but not prominent.
